The Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai offices were founded in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respectively. Sidley has a large U.S. securities team in Hong Kong, as well as lawyers qualified to practice both Hong Kong and English law. The Hong Kong office focuses on capital markets, particularly securities and structured finance. It also has a strong dispute resolution department. Sidley is also well-respected for its Mainland-based capital markets work, although those practices have tended to focus on debt transactions. The firm prides itself on its good relations with PRC governmental institutions. It is also considered one of the more active foreign firms operating in South Korea with a dedicated team based in Hong Kong.

With its strong local client base, in mid 2008, Sidley Austin worked on several debt/equity deals in the China region. The firm represented Nine Dragons Paper Ltd. for its US$300 million offering, relating to Regulation S/Rule 144A. The firm went on to represent Country Garden, a leading Chinese developer, in their issuance of Regulation S convertible bonds, worth US$600 million. Sidley Austin has been hit by the retirement of renowned securitisation partner Balbir Bindra; the firm has tried to regroup by moving Partha Pal from London to Singapore, where he specialises in structured finance, especially relating to real estate assets. Clients praise his ‘legal knowledge, responsiveness, ability to articulate clearly and his commercial judgement’. The ‘knowledgeable’ Samuel Chau took the lead in advising Standard Chartered Bank as arranger in a $900m residential mortgage-backed securitisation for Standard Chartered First Bank.
